Calling In For Some Back Up…
There is nothing easy about running long distances, especially on days like today. When the high temperature is below freezing (without factoring in the windchill) and it is flurrying off and on, I have a much easier time curling up with a book under the covers than lacing up my running shoes.
However due to necessity and scheduling, I had to get in a 9 miler today. Even though my math rules trick (a long run can be broken up into repeated smaller parts) is helpful and was utilized today, I needed to throw in another little runners trick into the mix: I called for back up.
I must say the idea didn’t exactly come from me, but once my running partner Jodi suggested it, I found it to be genius just like her. She said that she will run with me anytime I go on a long run for the last few miles. I just needed to figure out a way to alert her of when and where to meet me. Brilliant, right?
I thought today was as good of a time as any to try it out. I gave her a 20 minute head’s up and she met me at my designated point and together we did the last three. It is amazing what having a running buddy with you will do for your stamina and motivation. I swear the last 3 miles went by so quickly that I could hardly believe it when we were done. All I can say is that this will be a repeat technique!
