There is a running joke that for as much as I’ve been through in my life- the good, the bad and the ugly that my actual age must be 80. Although this might explain why I get along so well with elderly folks, I see the compilation of my unique experiences as my reason for remaining strong even when all else fails.
Life can be crappy. Things happen and when they do, we want to shut down. We want to run and hide, turn the page and forget about the past. I’ve been there, believe me. However, I’ve found one little secret that helps keep all my screws from coming loose and it is no credit of my own.
When everything is going wrong, how do I keep on going? How do I rise above? The answer is simple- FAMILY. I am continually blessed with the best family a girl can ask for and at the center of all of this is one of the most important people- my sister.
Now things haven’t always been so perfect with our relationship. Growing up, we fought, we exchanged hurtful words and we did things to intentionally harm one another. So what changed?
I’m not sure. Maybe it was the influence of our late grandmother stressing the important gift that sisterhood serves? As one of the eldest of six, she didn’t go a day without talking with her sisters. Maybe it was the challenges we faced? It really could have been anything. I’m not sure how it happened, but it did and I’m the luckiest person in the world because of it.
My sister is my best friend. She understands me in ways that others will never be able. Thus next time you are lonely, reach out to someone in your family. If there is one thing our family has always taught us, blood is always thicker than water.
Be well and have a great week.
